This code of practice applies to the machinery used in the logging of hardwood and cypres spine, and clear felling of large radiata pine. It is designed to set safety standards for the method of hauling logs (snigging) using different plant.
The code compares different methods of hauling logs. It compares the uses of rubber tyred skidders versus crawler tractors. It also runs through the advantages and disadvantages of using each type of machinery.
The code goes onto identify particular hazards associated with snigging and other associated activities, such as:
- Traversing side slopes whilst running unloaded
- The weight of a log vs skidder/tractor capacity
- snigging down hill
- overhead hazards and
- snigging heavy logs uphill
