Unfortunately many workplace injuries have resulted from workers not knowing what they are working with. This is often due to inadequate labelling. Substances get decanted from their original containers and are not properly labelled.
This code of practice adopts the practices for labelling workplace substances as recommended by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission. It provides practical guidance on meeting the requirements for the labelling of hazardous substances used at work.
As general guidance the code suggests that all the information on labels should be
- on an outside face of the container
- in the English language
- in durable print
- in lettering of a size and style which is easily legible
The code is very detailed and lenghty, addressing issues such as the use of risk phrases, the inclusion of ingredients, safety phrases and directions for use and first aid procedures. It is supported by samples and information of family names of chemicals.
