Use of Electrical Tools on Board Fishing Vessels

21 July 2003

The fishing industry is one of the most hazardous of all industries. The use of electricity on board fishing vessels requires extreme levels care. Fatalities have occurred when unexpected waves flood the deck when using electrical equipment.

Some of the main steps to take to manage the on board fishing vessels when using electricity are outlined below. It is vital to carry out a risk assessment when new work equipment is introduced. This should be conducted in consultation with workers and be documented.

The risk assessment should identify:

* That the equipment is designed to be used in the intended work environment.

* Possible safety and health hazards associated with the equipment.

* The significance of the risks.

* What is to be done to control the risks.

Portable electrical equipment must either be specifically designed for use in a marine environment or used in locations where they are not exposed to contact with water. Portable hand tools or tools operated by compressed air supply offer safer alternatives.

Extension leads must be kept away from water.

A residual current device must protect all circuits used to supply portable electrical equipment.
